Discography History ~ a Close Up
Jack Radics (Balfour Bailey), recorded a cover version of Kool and the Gang's "Get Down On It" while involved with the New World sound system in the mid-70s. He relocated to London in the early 80s where he met up with producer Blacker Dread. He released "Easy,” a duet with Debbie Ryvers, and "Walk On By" in 1985 before Island Records signed him under his real name. He recorded an album but few tracks released before the contract expired in 1988. He then returned to Jamaica where he had two hits, "Dream Merchant" and "Conversation'. His performance at the Sting 90 festival firmly established his reputation, which centered on his exaggerated baritone. Using this vocal style, backed with dancehall rhythms, he had a number of hits for several Jamaican producers. Castro Brown released his debut, 1991"s Jack, and he had hits with "Set My Heart On Fire" for Shocking Vibes, "All Of Me" on Freddie McGregor's Big Ship label, "Good Loving" for Lloyd Honeyghan, and "I'll Be Sweeter" and "My Love Is On Fire" for Penthouse Records. During the next two years, Jack Radics recorded several cover versions for various producers in the UK, Jamaica, and the USA. His recordings in 1993 on Star Trail, Shocking Vibes, Bobby Digital and Taxi concentrated on self-written material with more cultural content. “Something” released in summer 1993 on the Montego Bay label, Top, and “I'll be Sweeter” on Penthouse in October. Radics had an international hit with "Twist & Shout", on which Sly And Robbie teamed him with Chaka Demus and Pliers. It reached number 1 on the UK singles chart in January 1994 .
